Mining Top and Subsoil Removal

Simultaneously, mining over many years has resulted in both environmental and social consequences that have not been fully recognised or dealt with. 

Carocept acknowledges this and follows the Guideline for Rehabilitation of Mined Land (Chamber of Mines, 2007) that provides regulations for soil stripping and stockpiling accordingly. In addition, we follow the accepted principles which require pre-mining soil studies, detailed mapping soils, detailed soil stripping guides for operational staff and the immediate placement of soil after stripping. We also undertake the stripping of each layer of soil which is made up of 3 layers and execute dry stripping as well in an effort to prevent compaction.

At Carocept, soil is viewed as an irreplaceable resource. Because of this, it is stored in soil banks prior to mining and the development of treated soil is monitored continually and compared with natural soil development. Soil, unfortunately, cannot be restored to its original state once stripped for the purpose of mining, but huge improvements can be made in the methodology of stripping and re-dressing of soil material to ensure the sustainability of rehabilitation.
